Analyzing Subway’s Growth

Posted by Martin Cooper 20 November, 2009

After all of the burger franchises have prospered as they have, who would have guessed that the next company to make it big would be a sandwich giant? Subway has thrived nationwide, and I’m going to give a glimpse into the situation to explain their success.

One major reason for Subway’s success is the health factor. Subway, unlike McDonald’s and other burger chains, doesn’t offer food that’s loaded with saturated fats, salts, and cholesterol. People appreciate this, as the general public has become more concerned with what it eats in recent years.

Thanks to Jared Fogel’s success in losing hundreds of pounds through eating Subway, the brand thrived on the heels of his story. Many people have seen what Jared did, and believe that the results speak for themselves. Subway has responded with a huge marketing blitz that has lasted for years.

2. Pricing. Another great idea Subway had was to introduce the 5 dollar footlong. As money becomes tighter and tighter, consumers didn’t want to waste money on lunch that wasn’t tasty and filling.

People love a good deal, and there’s no doubt that Subway’s $5 sandwiches are a great deal in this day and age. Even a meal at McDonald’s can often cost more than a Subway 12-inch sub with chips. The competitive pricing has easily made Subway an attractive place to buy a lunch from during these hard economic times.

3. Location, location, location. The Subway Restaurants are pretty small. Therefore, they can fit basically anywhere. You will find them in gas stations, strip malls and in towns with less than a thousand people.

With so many convenient locations, people can grab a bite to eat quickly and easily, watching the people make it right in front of you. It’s no wonder this is the fastest growing chain in existence. People simply love the food and the convenience that Subway offers.

Subway has shown no signs of slowing down in growth. Jared is still around, the prices haven’t gone up and I just saw another new Subway today when I was driving. I guess it’s time to go find five more dollars.
