How to Make a Choice to Which Type of Car Seat for Your Baby

Choosing the right car seat for your child will depend mostly upon the childs size or age. Babies will require an infant seat or combination type seat while the older child will probably need a booster type seat.

The Infant Rear-Facing Seat

This type of car seat is suitable for little children up to 15 months of age or up to 30lbs in weight. Due to its rear-facing design, safety is a premium. If the car is involved in an accident then the weight of the impact is distributed over the back area, which is the strongest area in the body.

The benefits of the infant rear are: – the seat uses a 3-point or 5-point safety harness – the seat is easily secured by using the seat belt – they tend to be light weight and mobile which can aid to transfer the child to and from the car if sleeping

What should we be looking for? – facility of a recliner to allow for full head and back support – nicely cushioned head pillow which is removable – front adjusting 3 or 5-point safety harness

Toddler Forward-Facing Car Seat

Once the age of one year onwards is reached (or 20lbs or above in weight) then is the time to move on to the front-facing car seat.

The benefits of this type of seat include the following:

- a 5-point harness is used for extra security – the seat should be able to be adjusted for more comfortable use – the seat is secured by the car seat belt

The Combination/Convertible Seat

The main benefit of this particular type of seat over any other similar seat is that there is no need for further money to be spent on another car seat once your child reaches a certain age, up to the age of 4 that is (or 40lbs in body weight).

The benefits of this type of seat are:

- save on costs – safety harness is 5-point – secured by car seat belts

High-Back Booster Seats

Designed for children who weigh between 20 and 80lbs but can be adapted for older children. They can be placed either in the rear seat or the front as they are forward-facing and are secured with a lap and diagonal seat belt.

The benefits:

- secured by either the car seat belt or a 5-point safety harness for younger children – adjustable height ” helps to alleviate car sickness and boredom – headrest is adjustable for comfort – often the features can include drink holders and mesh pockets
