How to Stop Negative Thinking Even If You Don’t Believe It’s Possible
Want to stop negative thinking but don’t know how? You’re not alone. Many of us truly believe the negative thoughts that enter our mind, and just can’t see how we can ever stop them. However, it really is possible to change the way you think. Just keep reading to find out more.
Why Am I So Negative?
Asking yourself about why you have these thoughts is the first step – usually it comes from something deep in ourselves, and we’ve somehow trained ourselves that our negative thoughts are really true. If you want to stop negative thinking then you don’t need to feel guilty about this, but recognising this is the first step.
Types of Negative Thoughts
Most negative thoughts will fall into one of these categories, and learning what they are can help you to recognize every negative thought that enters your mind.
Filtering: This is when you ignore the positive sides to a situation and only think about the negative.
Polarizing: This means everything seems either black or white to you, good or bad, and there is no middle ground.
Personalizing: This means you blame yourself for things that really aren’t true and aren’t in your control.
Catastrophizing: You always expect the worse and even avoid doing things because you think bad things will happen.
Learning to Recognize Negative Thoughts
The number one reason why it is so hard to stop negative thinking is that negative thoughts are everywhere. Many other people can instill negative thoughts within you, as well as the media, which is why it’s become habit for you to think in this way. Now that you know some of the signs, you’ll be in a much better position to start breaking the pattern. It will take time, but it is very possible.
