Often a toddler’s temper tantrum denotes a need for attention, affection, and help dealing with overwhelming emotions. For a five year old, emotions can go very strong very fast.
Set aside a place in your house for your child to go when they are having a hard time controlling their emotions. You can call this a calm couch or a call seat. Whatever you call it, use it as a place to train your child on how to regulate his own emotions.
Find Out What Is Bothering Your Child
At the age of five, tantrums are not typical. The normal reasons of separation anxiety, frustration, and problems communicating, are not as likely anymore. That means, you need to invest and find what is causing your child to have such strong emotional responses.

Start keeping a journal of when the tantrums happen and as much information as you can gather prior to the tantrums occurring. Record meals, snacks, places (visiting a house), playing with pets, and anything else you can think to collect.
Inspect the Data
Now that you have the data, you need to find that the trend. Review the data for a common thread between all the tantrums. He could be a food they ate. He could be animals they played with. It can be a number of things. So look closely, and realize that the tantrum may be caused by something around your child.
