Like Water for Chocolate: Striking and sensuous film from a novel by Laura Esquivel set in the early part of the 20th century: a youthful female’s life is conditioned by her serious and unyielding mom, who treats her terribly. Sumptuous story, not without humor, with a excellent cast and a top of the line performance from lead actress Cavazos. Cast includes Lumi Cavazos, Marco Leonardi, Regina Tome, Mario Ivan Martinez, and Ada Carrasco. (113 minutes, 1992)
Summer: A tender however whiny actress is forgotten about by her buddies on the eve of a group holiday, so goes it alone with disastrous outcomes at first. Seemingly more improvised than the older version. Cast includes Marie Riviere, Lisa Heredia, Vincent Gauthier, Beatrice Romand, and Carita. (96 minutes, 1986)
The Wedding Singer: Robbie has just been dumped, right before he was supposed to get married. He resumes his job as a wedding singer, but is miserable and depressed. While singing at weddings he strikes up a friendship with a waitress, who is engaged to a total jerk. Can these two see that they are meant for each other?
The Last Run: Average story of aging gangland driver who has to make one more run for his self image. Incredible photography shot by Sven Nykvist. Cast includes George C. Scott, Tony Musante, Trish Van Devere, and Colleen Dewhurst. (99 minutes, 1971)
Alfie: Well redone rendition of Bill Naughton play he additionally inscribed. Caine is marvelous as philandering Cockney playboy who is put in a very tough situation. Rhapsody in Blue: Hollywood biography of George Gershwin is largely fiction, although comes off better than most other composer biographies, seizing Gershwin’s excitement for his work, and some of his central conflicts. Cast includes Robert Aida, Joan Leslie, Alexis Smith, Oscar Levant, Charles Coburn, Hazel Scott, and Al Jolson. (139 minutes, 1945)
