Seizure: Rock’s directorial debut is trendy although incoherent shocker in which novelist Frid, his family and buddies are made to play games of death by a trio of wicked weirdoes who may or may not be his bad dreams coming to life. Nomad: On the desolate steps of 18th-century Kazakhstan, in a battle for freedom, mystic combatant Oraz saves a child descended from Genghis Khan who is destined to join the country as “Mansur”. Historical fable has nasty sabers on horseback fights and excellent production layout (locals being used as add-ons) however trudging storytelling. Cast includes Kuno Becker, Jay Hernandez, Jason Scott Lee, and Mark Dacascos. (110 minutes, 2005)
The Man in the Iron Mask: Handsome retelling of the reliable Alexander Dumas story of a guy unreasonably imprisoned and encased in an iron mask-since his very existence challenges the reigning baron of France, the youthful, self-centered Louis XIV. The destiny of both are eventually in the hands of the aging although still enthusiastic Musketeers. It could be difficult to miss with that cast; the film is relatively enjoyable, however it does go on too long. Cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gerard Depardieu, Peter Sarsgaard, and Hugh Laurie. (132 minutes, 1998)
