Hookah, Narguila, Hubbly Bubbly, Shisha: A Water Pipe By Any Other Name
A friend recently bought a hookah and asked me — “how does this thing actually work, anyway?” As I started to explain the technical side of it, how to light it, the proper technique, etc. — he interrupted me. “No, no, I mean why is this thing so great? What’s the point of it all?”
A hookah pipe is basically a water pipe intended for the smoking of tobacco. The majority of hookah pipes out there are made of glass with dual flexible stems drawing the water cooled smoke from the pipe. Hookahs are used to smoke tobacco as well as other substances and they originated in India. Over the years they made their way to the Middle East and slowly became known around the world.
