An interrupted flow of blood to the brain results in a stroke. The brain contains certain areas that are responsible for certain body functions. An area or function of the body affected by a stroke is relative to the area of the brain which has sustained the stroke.
Stroke victims will receive IV medication treatment at the beginning of the episode and continue with oral medications during recovery and rehabilitation. Treatment of stroke must be given within three hours of onset of symptoms in order to prevent further brain damage and even death. Once a stroke has occurred, the main goal of treatment is to restore blood flow to the entire body.

The temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain as a result of a thrombus is referred to as a TIA or Mini Stroke. In this instance, the body will react by quickly releasing tPA to dissolve the clot on its own. This body function results in symptoms, however does not result in any damage to brain tissue. This TIA is a warning sign from your body that an impending stroke will occur and medical help should be sought immediately. These mini warning signs happen in ischemic episodes and although ischemic and hemorrhagic are completely opposite situations, they both carry the same symptoms and inclinations.
There are several terms to describe strokes including brain attack and cerebrovascular accident. The cause of a stroke is not enough blood getting to part of you brain just the same as in a heart attack.
