Techniques Applied In Offset Printing

Printing service is used by most businesses for different functions such as marketing and intra-company communications. Therefore it is helpful to learn about the basic working of the commonly used printing process called offset printing.

Offset printing can generate a large number of prints quickly, which makes it more economical than other techniques and also more popular. The clients giving big printing orders are advised by the printers to opt for offset printing due to this reason.

This printing technology uses oil-based ink, which the water can not dissolve. The offset printing gets its name from the fact that the designs are transmitted indirectly from the plates to the paper by use of rubber blankets as the medium.

The process begins by preparing the designs. Previously the images were produced by creating film negatives and were then transferred to aluminum printing plates. This is no longer required as the technology exists for making the plates in one go through an image setting system. This plate is then put on a cylinder in the proper configuration. Then the water and ink are spread on the image plates, one after another. The image gets the ink while the rest of the area gets a thin coating of water, which makes sure that the ink does not spill past the images.

After painting it with ink, the image is kept on a rubber blanket which is on a different cylinder, leading the image to be inverted. The image is then printed with its correct side looking up by cutting sheets of papers into appropriate size and putting them on a third cylinder.

The job of printing is completed by the printing company by consolidating the printed sheets using staples or paste or in any other way as per the requirements of the client.

The most usual type of offset printing uses light-sensitive chemicals and photographic techniques in transmitting images and typing from master copy to printing plates. The master copy may be the current photographic print and typeset text. However, it is more common, with the prevalence of computers and digital images, that the original material exists only as data in a digital printing system.
