Wine Australia
Australian wine is renowned for being full of flavour and easy to drink. Australian wine is unique. It continues to use the traditions of the past but is able to be extremely innovative.[ I:9:J]
Australia is a huge country and it is this size that allows such a large range of climates and soils. This range is far greater than Europe given it is just so much bigger. The result is a large range of wines with incredible regional character.
The strive for uniqueness by the Australian wine growers means they don’t attempt to replicate wines from other countries. The growers are also not hampered by incumbent rules and regulations that the old world wines have to stick to. Instead they can be new and innovative and the end results are astonishing.
It’s often said that the old wine labels can be confusing. In contrast, the Australian wine labels are easy to read and provide you with all the information you could possibly need, in an easy to understand format.
What’s enchanting about Australian wine is that the different areas and climates produce some great wines. Australia is a wonderfully exotic country and this is brought out in their wines with each region having its own remarkable taste.
Visiting the right wine region is a personal choice. There are over a hundred different regions to choose from so pick an area where you know you will enjoy the grape variety.
The Hunter Valley is usually a popular choice given its proximity to Sydney. In just 2 hours you can be at the heart of the Hunter Valley, famous for its Semillon and Shiraz. There are plenty of wine tours available so you don’t have to worry about a designated driver as the wineries are spread out over a large area. To get the most out of a trip here, you really do need transport to explore Lovedale, Pokolbin and Broke.
There are lots of wineries to choose from. I would recommend a visit to Audrey. This is one of the oldest vineyards in the Hunter but its cellar door is very modern. This is a great place to bring a picnic, as the views from up here are breathtaking.
If you are looking for a leisurely afternoon, enjoy lunch at one of the may winery restaurants. The food is impressive and of course the wines are perfectly matched.
There are also some nice cheese and chocolate shops, a world-class golf course and plenty of spas for ladies that like some pampering.
If you have the chance to visit the west coast of Australia, then a trip to Margaret River is a must. This wine region is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. It is just 3 hours from Perth and is a very pretty part of Australia.
On one side you’ll find beautiful beaches and on the other, picturesque wineries with great cellar doors and restaurants. This really is a great place to spend a week relaxing, eating and drinking.
Visiting and Experiencing at least one of Australia’s many wine regions is an important part to any trip down under. Make sure it’s on your To Do List!
