You Can Stop Smoking Without NRT
If I could avoid killing my body and keep smoking I would. I am not a lover of cigarettes mind you, but I do enjoy the taste of cigarettes not to mention the rush I get to my brain. Incidentally did you know that cigarette addiction is centered in your brain? This is why you can stop smoking without NRT.
Nicotine inhaled into your lungs goes into your blood system and hits your brain faster than all other narcotics except for heroin and morphine. Your brain is getting a charge over and over with each puff you take.
You are able to quit habits easily compared to addictions because habits are behavior based. You bite your nails because you get nervous. Change what makes you nervous or your reaction to nervousness and you can stop biting your nails. But an addiction that affects part of your body, like smoking on your brain takes more than behavior modification.
I stopped smoking for health reasons. Now do not get me wrong. I was never a one or two pack a day smoker. No, I smoked when I was in my twenties when I went out drinking with friends. I did this for about a year. Then one day I went to play full court basketball like I used to growing up. I spent the second half of the game bent over fighting to breathe. No more cigarettes for a long time after that experience.
It has been over fifteen years since I had smoke by the way. And I have no plan to go back. I believe I have breathed enough dirty air living in the city at my age so why make it worse by lighting up a cigarette again.
But when I was younger I started smoking when I got out of college. I did to because I used to go out drinking with friends who smoked so I smoked. After a few months I started playing basketball, just some little pick up games on the weekend. Normally I could run up and down the court with no problem. This time I was bent over gasping for air. No more cigarettes for me.
Then one day at work when I was having a tough day I thought about my one cigarette. I thought about lighting it up. I imagined inhaling that first draw of smoke. I imagined the rush to my head. I thought about letting out the smoke nice and slow through my nostrils. My brain was jumping up and down with anticipation. I realized I had a problem.
I decided not to smoke my cigarette that night when I got home. No I tossed the pack in the trash. I thought if I looked forward to a smoke to ease my day at work then I had a bigger problem than a hard day at work. And the problem was in my mind, my brain actually. You can stop smoking without NRT when you understand you need to overcome your brain’s need for nicotine. You might have to go through some tough times. But you have to learn to say no to your brain. You can do it!
